It's easier said than done when you're dealing with a diverse workforce that demands a culture that fosters respect, inclusion & growth.

We often misread situations in our professional & personal spaces to be a one off case, an isolated incident.  

This can cause more damage than expected in the long run. Be it employees in our offices or at home, the obstacle could be similar in nature. What differs is the magnitude of its repercussions.

In my experience over the last 25 yrs, employee relations challenges emanate from some of the most obvious factors that we take for granted -

From - The age old Conflict management to our current generation's resolution on Work- Life balance priorities.

Conflict management is critical in all aspects, as poor conflict management will disrupt collaborative work environments & advocate a culture of negativity, Decreased productivity & job dissatisfaction ultimately leads to attrition. Employee relations get impacted far worse, if there is no timely diffusion of stress & tensions that lead to conflicts between co-workers or employees and managers.

Ineffective Leadership : Disengagement, lack of direction & deceased employee motivation are common factors for loss of productivity. Don't be surprised if you're dealing with the big bad apple of unsupportive leadership. Long term effects of poor leadership also hinder innovation & organisational growth. Let's not forget the negative impact on attracting & retaining great talent.

Inclusion : Employees often resist organisational changes due to natural inhibitions of the unknown attributed to the lack of involvement in the decision making processes. Business is impacted negatively with delays in implementation, decreased morale & productivity that induces a loss of opportunities in innovations required to stay ahead of the curve. Take into account the impending costs associated with change management delays due to resistance rising from poor inclusion policies.

Inconsistency : Constant change in business plans or goals bring in lack of clarity & inconsistency. Not the best approach if you're looking to avoid the breeding ground of growing confusion & frustrations. The stress of not meeting deliverables due to constant changes & knee jerk business strategies build perceptions of an unfair system, reduced trust in management unquestionably hinders employee morale & productivity. The impact is detrimental if this is coupled with poor communication between management & employees.

Work - Life Balance : Today's workforce focuses on their work - life balance immeasurably more than their predecessors. A work life balance that conflicts with one's personal life due to the demand & hustle of work undoubtedly causes burnout, stress & dissatisfaction amongst employees. Business is impacted with decreased employee engagement, motivation, productivity & retention. The new norms of hybrid work culture / remote work from anywhere practices do help with positive employee engagement, the question being is this truly the new normal?

Being proactive, fostering a culture of open communication & inclusion has its merits in mitigating the risk of poor employee engagement. Topping it up with consistency & effective leadership, will stir up a magic potion of enhanced employee relations driving high productivity & meritocratic business outcomes.

5 Employee Relations Challenges

1. Conflict resolution 

Conflicts are an inevitable part of any workplace, and if left unresolved, they can have adverse effects on employee morale and productivity.

Managing conflicts between employees can be challenging for human resources personnel. Disagreements can arise over different work styles, personalities, personal issues, or opinions. And if not handled correctly, they can escalate into more significant issues that affect employee morale and productivity. 

Effective communication, mediation, and problem-solving skills are crucial for HR professionals and managers to resolve conflicts between employees and restore positive working-employee relationships.

2. Wages and pay raises

Insufficient compensation is a significant cause of dissatisfaction among employees. Business owners may face limitations in their payroll budget, making it challenging to provide across-the-board salary hikes during annual performance reviews.

Examples Of Employee Relations Issues

Employee relations issues can arise in any workplace and can have a variety of causes. 

Here are a few examples of employee relations issues in the workplace. All of these may be based on real-life but are fictitious and do not refer to any particular company or individual. 

1. Discrimination and harassment

A female employee from a lower caste complained that she is subject to discriminatory treatment by an upper-caste workplace bully. She claims that the person refuses to work with her, excludes her from team meetings, and makes derogatory comments about her caste.

2. Unfair treatment

An employee complains to management that she is unfairly treated by her team members because of her age. She claims that younger employees are given more desirable shifts and opportunities for advancement.

3. Wage issues

Employees complain that they are not paid for all the hours they work and don’t receive overtime pay when required. 

4. Poor employee working conditions

Employees complain about unsafe employee working conditions, including inadequate staffing levels, broken equipment, and insufficient training.

5. Performance management

Employees complain that the performance management system is unfair and that promotions and pay raises are based on favoritism rather than merit.
